How Do Combine Harvesters Work?
If you've ever wondered how combines manage to harvest all of those crops so quickly, we are here to help with all the info you need! In this blog post, we're going to take a look at how combine harvesters work and what their various components are. Read on to learn more.
What Does a Combine Do?
The first thing you need to know about combine harvesters is that they are essentially giant threshing machines. The machine collects the crop, separates the grain from the straw, and then cleans the grain before it is stored in a bin on the back of the machine.
Components
The combine harvester has several different components that work together in order to thresh the grain and clean it. Let's take a look at each of these components:
The Cutting Platform: The cutting platform is located at the front of the machine and is used to cut the crop. The platform consists of a number of rotating blades that cut through the crop and deposit it into the feeder house.
The Feeder House: The feeder house is located behind the cutting platform and is used to hold the crop while it is being threshed. The harvest is fed into the threshing cylinder by augers located in the feeder house.
The Threshing Cylinder: The threshing cylinder is where the straw and grain are separated. The cylinder consists of a series of metal bars that beat the straw and grain against each other until the grain is separated from the straw.
The Cleaning System: The cleaning system removes any remaining straw or chaff from the grain. The system consists of rotating screens and brushes that help remove any unwanted material from the grain.
Now that you know how combine harvesters work, you can appreciate them, even more, the next time you see one out in the field! These machines are true marvels of engineering and have greatly increased our ability to harvest crops quickly and efficiently.
